Eucalypts are predominantly Australian – there are around 900 species, with only a handful of species endemic to nearby countries. They are estimated to be around 100 million years old, and have several unusual features including fruiting bodies (gumnuts) that withstand heat and release their well-preserved seeds after bushfires.
