Underwater Drama
Ian Nelson, National Geographic Your Shot

Your Shot photographer Ian Nelson was freediving off the coast of Maui when he saw an eel and began following it. “The eel found what it was looking for and darted its head into a dark hole and started aggressively attacking,” he remembers. “Dark ink shot out, and octopus legs begin reaching out of the hole. Out came an Ornate Octopus (Callistoctopus ornatus) darting away from the eel right toward my lens, pausing briefly in front of me before darting off again.”

This photo was submitted to Your Shot, our storytelling community where photographers can take part in photo assignments, get expert feedback, be published, and more. Join now to submit your photos.

All I wanted to do was try and see if I could work with watercolor….

What did it end up being? Tentacles. Of course. @reallyelegantsharkfish I blame you and our conversations! I never even attempted to draw an octopus before, but I couldn‘t help myself today. This just has to be your fault.
